Attractions

Blacksmithing was one of the most important fields of human activity. Based on the ability to process iron ore, we can evaluate the maturity of ancient civilizations.
People's first attempts to process iron date back to the 3rd millennium BC. n. l., findings from this period are very rare and come from the area of Mesopotamia. During this period, randomly found material of usually meteorite origin was processed. On the objects found in this way, it is possible to observe basic blacksmithing techniques such as drawing, splitting, sharpening and piercing.

The first material used for forging was meteoric or earth iron, and at that time it was known that there were great differences in the quality of the material. When iron began to be mined systematically, the difference was well known and, of course, reflected in the price. Within a short time, weaknesses and advantages of individual materials were discovered, which influenced their further use.

Greater development of blacksmithing occurred around the 12th century BC. n. l. in Asia, where the first metal articles for daily use are being made. Because working with fire was considered a "mysterious craft", blacksmiths surrounded many cults, myths and superstitions.

Nowadays, blacksmithing in developed countries is a marginal and rather artistic craft. Since many branches have disappeared, blacksmithing today is largely linked to village blacksmithing, where the blacksmith did all the work with hot iron.
