Alternative or non-original batteries are a good choice if you don't want to spend extra on expensive original batteries for digital cameras. These batteries are notable for their lower purchase price, but they can offer a much larger battery capacity and will last longer on a single charge. However, the battery may not always be 100% compatible with your camera body, and non-original batteries also tend to have a lower number of charging cycles, so they won't last you as long overall.

How to choose the right battery

When selecting a replacement battery, follow the camera manufacturer' s specifications as listed on the original battery or in the instruction manual. Pay attention to the voltage, which is given in volts (V), and battery capacity (mAh/Wh). The type designation of the battery is also important (eg LI-40B).

Battery capacity

Battery capacity is listed in mAh. It typically ranges from 700 to 1,400 mAh. The higher the capacity, the more pictures you can take with your camera.

Up to 1,000 mAh - batteries with a capacity of up to 1,000 mAh are mostly used in compact cameras. Allows you to take up to 350 pictures on a single charge.
Over 1,000 mAh - used mainly for DSLRs and mirrorless cameras. Usually allows you to take up to 500 pictures on a single charge.
