A table milling machine is a type of milling machine where the milling motor and tool are mounted underneath the work surface or table. The cutting tool, known as a cutter, thus protrudes upwards through a hole in the table top. In contrast to a top milling machine, where the tool is moved along the material, in a table milling machine the workpiece moves along the fixed table top against the rotating tool. This design provides a stable and flat support surface, which allows for precise material guidance. It is mainly used for edge shaping, so-called "profiling", creating grooves or making construction joints in wooden or other parts. To ensure straight and precise cuts, the milling machine is equipped with a longitudinal ruler on which the material rests during feed.
