• A gamepad (or joypad) is a gaming controller mainly used for sports, combat or platform games. These are mainly games that do not require sensitive control of the mouse cursor or many different buttons and keyboard shortcuts. That being said, gamepads are not very suitable action and strategy games.
• A joystick (also known as a control column) is most useful for flight simulators as it accurately replaces the controller of a real aircraft.
• Dance pads are designed for special music and dance games (e.g. Stepmania), which are often included in the package and are controlled by the impact of the player's feet on the control sensors (most often arrows).
• A steering wheel, often also equipped with pedals, is used to simulate the control system of a real car. Not surprisingly, it is most commonly used with racing games.

Choosing a Gaming Controller - What to Focus On

• Compatible devices - Are you choosing your dream device as a PC controller only or do you want to use it also with your gaming console (e.g. PlayStation 4 or Xbox One)?
• Ergonomics - It depends on the specific category of a game controller; there will be different requirements for a steering wheel and a gamepad. In general, however, it's about how well the device fits into your hand (consider the dimensions of the controller). Also focus on whether the active elements (e.g. buttons) are placed on the device in a way that suits you. For example, with gamepads, it is possible to see a big difference between the chunkier Xbox controller and the thinner PlayStation controller.
• Connection type - It is important to decide whether to choose a wired or a wireless controller.
