It has long been known that vitamin D is important for the proper functioning of muscles, bones and teeth. In children, it is needed for proper bone growth and development. But it is also of great importance for immunity. The human body can make vitamin D on its own by regularly exposing the skin to sunlight. In our geographical conditions, we don't get as much sun throughout the year, so vitamin D supplementation is needed. However, not everyone regularly consumes foods rich in vitamin D - oily sea fish, egg yolks, some mushrooms, milk and dairy products - so vitamin D supplements are important. (The adult population in the Czech Republic receives from the usual diet (i.e. without supplements) averaged 3.6 ug of vitamin D/day. Less than 1% of adults would meet the new recommendation of 15-20 ug/person/day). Vitamin D is fat-soluble, so its absorption in the body is increased if it is taken together with fat.
