- Original batteries are manufactured directly by the laptop manufacturer. They tend to be more expensive, but always offer 100% compatibility.
- Compatible batteries are any other batteries that are suitable for your laptop but have not been made by the laptop manufacturer. A compatible battery is usually cheaper than an original battery while having similar characteristics.

- Li-Ion laptop batteries are lightweight and long-lasting. They do not suffer from the memory effect.
- NiMH laptop batteries are cheaper than Li-Ion batteries. They suffer from the memory effect. Today they are hardly used anymore.
The memory effect refers to a condition in which the battery discharges spontaneously during an extended outage.
The Capacity and Number of Cells of Laptop Batteries
The capacity for batteries for laptops is given in milliampere hours (mAh). In general, more capacity means more endurance. A multi-cell battery usually has a longer lifetime. This is due to the distribution of the load between the individual cells.

How Long will the Laptop Battery Keep Going?
We can calculate the expected battery life if we know the battery capacity. Battery manufacturers often include a Wh (watt-hour) figure in addition to the mAh to make it easier to calculate battery life.
Example: calculation for a 60 Wh battery
Battery power of (40 Wh) ÷ Laptop power consumption of (15 W for office work) = 6 hours
