5 principles of parenting

Compassionate and practical advice for every parent

Is there really a right way to raise children? Is everything really lost forever when we mess something up? And why do so many of us feel like we're failing as parents?
At a time when we as parents are under immense pressure, and so many of us feel we have to get everything perfect the first time, The 5 Principles of Parenting is the compassionate and truly reassuring read that has been missing until now.
In the book, Aliza Pressman distils decades of child development research into understandable and practical advice that we can actually apply. It answers the real questions and concerns that all parents face, but at the same time, it doesn't dictate exactly how you should raise your children. Science is clear on this: there is no single 'right' way.
It doesn't matter how you were raised, or how you have guided your children up to now – the book offers an opportunity to start afresh and embark on a manageable path that aligns with your values and the unique nature of your children.
Whether you have a toddler or a pre-teen at home (because the toddler and teenage 'rebellious phases' are surprisingly similar), it's never too late to start using these five principles – Relationship, Regulation, Reflection, Rules, and Repair – to help your children gain the resilience they need to flourish.
Through real stories, acceptance of imperfection, and difficult self-reflection, you will discover that the person you are actually raising is yourself. And as we become more mindful, we become better parents. And by becoming better parents, we become better people.
And that sounds good, doesn't it? That sometimes it's enough to do things well – not perfectly.
Among other things, what you will take away from the book:That the foundation of a child's healthy development is not flawlessness, but building a strong and secure relationship. How to develop the ability to regulate your own emotions and thereby naturally teach children how they can manage their own.The way that setting clear and fair rules brings order and predictability to the relationship. That all feelings are welcome, but not all behaviour is acceptable. The ability to acknowledge your misstep and repair the damaged relationship with your child.
