Gilbert Keith Chesterton
(1874-1936) was an English Catholic writer, author of many novels and mystery stories, playwright, poet, literary and social critic and debater, Journalist, Essayist, and Christian thinker. He came from a wealthy London family (his mother was of French descent). In 1901 he married Frances Blogg, but their marriage remained childless. Chesterton wrote about eighty books, several hundred poems, about two hundred short stories, four thousand essays and several plays. His best-known literary character is Father Brown, the priest in the detective stories, who appears in 53 short stories published between 1910 and 1936. Father Brown's model for Chesterton was his friend, the Catholic priest John O'Connor, who accompanied him on his spiritual quest to conversion to the Catholic faith. The Father Brown detective stories are still very popular, they have been translated into dozens of languages and have been made into several films and TV series. The ever-repeated British TV series from 2013 is very popular.
