A probable account of the final conversation
The president's final conversation with a parliamentarian of the putschists, moments before the military coup is completed. A radio play intended as a parallel to the events of August 1968 in Czechoslovakia. The radio play, titled 'A Probable Report on the Final Conversation', deals with the last moments of the life of Chilean President Allende during the coup led by the military junta. The democratically elected statesman, whose days seem to be numbered, is visited by a parliamentarian of the putschists to negotiate the terms of his voluntary resignation. In a long, philosophical conversation, two opposing approaches to political power emerge: while the president considers it necessary to honour his mandate from a free election, his opponent advocates political utilitarianism, defending violence and the right of the stronger. The production was recorded in 1974. Director Josef Melč cast Karel Höger and Luděk Munzar in the main roles; alongside them, you will hear Jiřina Petrovická and Jan Libíček.
