Agnessa

The testimony of a woman who, thanks to her husband's career, rose to the very top of Stalin's social elite.

Agnesa Mironova's memoirs, recorded by historian Mira Yakovenko from her own account, open the door to the rooms and salons of Stalin's executioners, the highest-ranking officers of the Soviet secret police during the purges of the 1930s and 1940s.
The book presents the extraordinary testimony of the wife of an ambitious NKVD officer, Sergei Mironov, who rose to the top of Stalin's social elite thanks to her husband's rapid career and, after his execution, went through prison and the Gulag herself. Agnessa talks honestly about her life full of sharp breaks, without regretting anything. She recalls the happy days of her youth, the luxurious life, the beautiful clothes and the ostentatious doing nothing she indulged in at a time when millions were starving to death.
The story of this charming and repulsive narrator resembles a novel. It brings to life the everyday life, human characters and mythology of a period that became the most terrible in modern Russian history.

Mira Jakovenkova

Mira Jakovenková (1917-2005) came from a family of Ukrainian intellectuals affected by the repressions of the 1930s and 1940s. Since the second half of the 1950s, she has been trying to rehabilitate her relatives, spending hours in queues at the prosecutor's office, the Supreme Court and the military tribunal. She correctly concluded that the secret Stalinist archives would not be opened easily. So she began to talk to the former Gulag prisoners who were waiting with her for the hearing and to write down the stories they were willing to tell. Agnesa Mironova's recorded narrative is the culmination of her long-standing efforts to capture living historical memory.

Agnessa Mironova

Agnessa Mironova (1903-1982) was born in Maikop at the northern foot of the Caucasus. She had Greek roots from her father. While growing up during the Civil War, she witnessed bloody clashes between the White Guards and the Red Guards. With her first husband, a Red Army officer Zarnitsky, she moved to Rostov, where she met Cheka officer Sergei Mironov. He became her second husband and the love of her life. She spent her thirties by his side in happiness and luxury. Mironov's arrest followed, and Agnessa later faced five years in a penal camp. After Mironov's execution, Agnessa married his cousin, editor and filmmaker Mikhail Korol. Since the second half of the 1950s, she has repeatedly and unsuccessfully sought Mironov's rehabilitation.
