Alma II - The Magic Song
This trio of kids, the world chose not to measure them equally. But the lie won't last forever...
Spring 1787. Thirteen-year-old Alma from the Okoa tribe continues her relentless search for her brother Lama, who was dragged to the New World by greedy slave traders along with hundreds of other Africans. Even after crossing the Atlantic, however, the girl is no closer to success. On the way, he and the young Josef Mars joined the pirates from the Caribbean and together they are combing the island of Santo-Domingo (today's Haiti), but even there they feel the resentment of the profiteers. Plus, they're about to split up. Poor orphan Joseph is still longing for the many tons of golden treasure that is said to be buried here. Alma seeks out Lama with cocoa and cane farmers and then heads to the cotton fields of the Louisiana colony. And what does the third voice in the author's magnificent cantata on the price of freedom have to say? Even the enterprising Miss Amélie Bassac, confused by her late father's shady dealings, has sailed to America to protect the family's overseas assets...
Do you hear that? There's something in the air! The second part of this thrilling epic from the pre-revolutionary times depicts the steps of teenagers who confront their cruel fate.
"De Fombelle shone a harsh light on the birth of white America, on the darkness lined with violence." - ActuaLitté
"Even outside the dungeons of the Bastille, the French were accustomed to taking the freedom of others. All in good time! The creator of Tobias Lolness and Vang shows that the regime at Versailles will soon lose it too." - El País
"The giant canvas of this fantastic adventure offers the author a great opportunity to portray in detail the darkest aspects of slavery. And the result is excellent." - Quest France
"A beautiful story with several heroes who are blown across the globe by the wind, trying to find their way (...) to someone or something. Intoxicating, almost magical at times, although it is actually very realistic. (...) One has the feeling that one is reading a fairy tale, and then one digs into history and finds out that it really was like that..." - from reader feedback on databazeknih.cz
