Alois Jirasek: Lucerna (1951)

Jirásek's fairy-tale play Lucerna is one of the best known titles of older Czech drama. It was already interesting at its premiere in 1905, when it was staged on the stage of the National Theatre by director Jaroslav Kvapil. He entrusted the artistic aspect of the performance to Mikoláš Alš and invited the then head of the opera, Karel Kovařovice, to collaborate on the music. The response was generally very favourable. We hope you will welcome the recording from the Golden Fund, in which you will hear Maria Burešová, Felix Le Breux and, as the teacher's youth, Václav Voska, whom we have come to associate with characters of a completely different nature in later productions. The production was directed by Přemysl Pražský in 1951.
