At the Golden Glove - DVD

An uncompromising portrait of a depraved, psychopathic brute driven by a hatred of women, sexual insatiability and sentimentality. It is also a social study of the dark side of Germany's economic miracle at the time, when individuals tossed about by the chaos of war and its aftermath suffered a complete lack of self-confidence.

The life's work of the repulsive and deformed alcoholic Fritz, from Hamburg's St. Pauli district, is the murder of local prostitutes. He hides their bodies in the walls of his attic flat, where the stench of rotting flesh mingles with the smell of bachelorhood and the fumes from the Greek restaurant downstairs.
The case of serial killer Fritz Honka shocked all of Germany in the mid-1970s and inspired Fatih Akin to make a film that stands in counterpoint to most thrillers on a similar theme. Instead of a methodical investigation, it offers only chaos, filth, stench and an almost haptic experience of Fritz Honka's "hell's kitchen".
With his signature elegance, Akin has created a monstrous artefact that rigorously tests the audience's resilience and subverts the cult of mystery built around serial murders.
