Joan Goodwin is content with her life as a university professor of physics and astronomy, but when she stumbles upon an advertisement seeking female scientists for NASA's space shuttle programme, she yearns to fly into space. In the summer of 1980, she is selected from thousands of applicants and begins training at the Johnson Space Centre in Houston. As the new astronauts prepare for their first flights, Joan discovers a passion and love she never dreamed of. Then, in December 1984, during mission STS-LR9, everything changes.
