Beren and Lúthien

The epic tale of Beren and Lúthien brings readers back among the human, elven, and dwarven inhabitants of Tolkien' s Middle-earth

The author wrote this story of fateful love in 1917, after returning from the battlefields of World War I. Over the next few years, he added to and revised the story, but its core remained unchanged: the love between the mortal man Beren and the immortal elf Lúthien, a relationship that Lúthien' s father did not wish for, and therefore gave Beren an impossible task - to deprive the dark lord Melkor (Morgoth) of the precious Silmaril. Published text from existing versions, printed and unprinted, prose and verse, carefully reconstructed by Tolkien' s son Christopher, and the legend of Beren and Lúthien may be published for the first time in its complete form, with commentary, which shows its transformations.
