One by one, Germany invades its neighbours and the wheels of the Second World War turn rapidly. Gradually, Maggie sees through the Nazis' horrific intentions and realises that she herself is a victim of the propaganda they are spreading. She struggles with her own conscience, torn between loyalty to her new homeland and disgust at her role in the Nazi regime. The world conflict that she helped play out with her work eventually threatens her life as well... Berlin is calling is a novel inspired by the real-life story of Mildred Gillars, a young American woman who participated in foreign broadcasts in Hitler's Germany during the war.
