The quirky duo of charismatic investigators are back on the scene
Tilly and Poe are back – in a police investigation that gets Washington Poe into a lot of trouble. Six years ago, as a police officer in Cumbria, he played a major role in the case of the murder of famous chef Jared Keaton's daughter. Although her body was never found, Poe was convinced that Keaton had killed his eighteen-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, in the restaurant they ran together. The jury agreed and Keaton was sentenced to life in prison.
But now a woman claiming to be Elizabeth Keaton has come forward to a local police officer. How could Poe have been so wrong? Or was he? He's still convinced he was right about Jared Keaton, the charming psychopath. But with so much evidence piling up against the original investigation, his job is harder than he could have ever imagined. However, with Tilly on his side, the odds should tip in his favour. Poe is about to go to work in his own unique way, hoping to find a flaw in Keaton's apparently perfect plan.
Just as things are starting to look particularly bleak for Poe, the Black Summer really comes into its own, thanks to some cunning plot work. The centre of the action is once again Cumbria, which lives and breathes in the author's hands and is an important part of the story.
