Božena Němcová

Božena Němcová has become a symbol of Czech literature and the National Revival. But what was she really like? Historian Jaroslav Čechura delves into her life through correspondence and other contemporary sources. He follows her struggle with a lack of money, illnesses, and difficult family circumstances. Alongside the fateful men in the writer's life, the women in her circle also come to the fore. The result is a multi-layered portrait of an exceptional personality and, at the same time, a vivid picture of the society in which a Czech cultural legend was born.
