Call the nurses.

A book of authentic memoirs about the author's youth when she worked as a midwife in a London suburb in the 1950s. It captures the atmosphere of the time: the post-war housing shortage, large families living in cramped flats (where, almost without exception, births also took place), complex family relationships and the harsh life in the East End, where unbelievable poverty reigned after the war and children played in bomb craters. The book was adapted into a successful BBC series.
