Cardinal Josef Beran

Using material collected by the late church historian J. V. Polc, the renowned publicist B. Svoboda has undertaken the task of chronologically recounting the life of the courageous Czech cardinal. The narrative follows him from his youth in Plzeň, through his studies in Rome, his teaching career in Prague, his imprisonment in German concentration camps, all the way to his tenure as the Archbishop of Prague and Primate of the Czech lands. Special attention is given to his heroic struggle against the communist regime, during which he became a spokesperson for the entire nation, a stance that ultimately led to his many years of internment.
