Christology from the borderlands

The theology of religion, various forms of postmodern theology, and liberation theology are among the most discussed areas of theology in recent decades. The study " Christology from the borderlands: Jacques Dupuis, Roger Haight and Jon Sobrino" brings an original contribution by Czech theologian Petr Jandejsek, who uses selected personalities of contemporary world theology to present the state of research in the given areas. The approaches to the person of Jesus Christ presented in the book are linked by a consistent consideration of the theologian's experience with the context in which he develops his theology and in which he comes to know Christ. This entails a responsibly courageous new reading of the Church's teaching about Christ. The connection between Dupuis, Haight and Sobrin is not accidental, for they are Jesuit theologians. The study examines the extent to which the common features of their theological thinking are influenced by post-conciliar Ignatian spirituality, experience with missionary work, and the epochal work of the Jesuit Karl Rahner. All three theologians are united by the fact that their work has been subjected to investigation by the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. The tension between their theological approaches and a certain conception of the theology of the Church, associated in the publication mainly with the work of Joseph Ratzinger, former Prefect of the Congregation and subsequently Pope Benedict XVI, forms another axis of the publication. The study thus presents a dispute over the interpretation of the Second Vatican Council and its legacy for (not only) Roman Catholic theology.
