Curved space
The deformations of psychological space caused by agoraphobia and claustrophobia at the end of the nineteenth century soon began to manifest themselves in architecture, urbanism, and film. Neuroses and phobias thus became one of the most significant sources of artistic creation in the twentieth century. English architectural historian and theorist Anthony Vidler (1941–2023) describes the formation of psychological concepts of space from Pascal and Freud to theorists of spatial alienation such as Georg Simmel, Siegfried Kracauer, and Walter Benjamin. Using examples of contemporary artists, he shows how digital technologies enable the architectural representation of such distorted space.
