Fortune de France #6

A historical saga about the fate of the nobleman Pierre de Siorac during the destructive religious wars in France at the end of the 16th century. The story covers the period from 1594, when Henry IV entered Paris as king, to the Edict of Nantes in 1599, which was intended to guarantee religious freedom. Siorac once again undertakes various missions in the service of the king and, upon his return to Paris, begins a long-lasting fight against the Jesuits, who represent a constant threat within the country.

Robert Merle

Robert Merle (born 28 August 1908 in Tébessa, Algeria – died 27 March 2004 in Grosrouvre, Yvelines, France) was a French novelist, playwright, literary historian, translator and professor of English and American literature. He became famous, for example, for his utopian sci-fi novel Malevil and the thirteen-part historical saga known in Czech as Dědictví otců. Some of his novels (e.g. Weekend at Zuydcoote, Malevil, The Day of the Dolphin) have also been successfully adapted into films. Robert Merle was born in Algeria, the son of an army officer. In 1918, his family moved to Paris, where he studied English, philosophy and literary studies. During the war, Robert Merle was captured at the Battle of Dunkirk and spent three years as a German prisoner. After the war, he worked as a professor of English and American literature. He then devoted himself mainly to his literary work.
