Divine Emperor of Dune

The fourth instalment of the spectacular saga – one of the most magnificent science fiction epics of all time.

The greatest predator the world has ever known, and also the loneliest creature in the entire universe, goes by the name of Leto Atreides II. For millennia, he has ruled the multi-galactic Empire with an iron fist. His father, Paul Atreides, known as Muad’Dib, once led the Fremen rebels to victory on the planet Arrakis, also called Dune. However, 3,500 years have passed since then, and both the planet, now called Rakis, and its long-lived ruler have changed beyond recognition. The sandy soil has become covered in green, and the sandworms, the only source of the miraculous spice, have disappeared. The Emperor guards the last remaining supplies as his greatest treasure and primary instrument of power. He himself, after accepting the sandtrout skin, has taken on the form of a several-metre-long worm with human hands and a face that strikes terror even into his most loyal servants. Using his prescient gift, he pushes humanity forward along the Golden Path, the only way that promises its future survival. But the enemies of the God Emperor have plans of their own…
The fourth part of the renowned Dune book series, which has made its mark on the history of sci-fi literature and is now once again coming to life on the big screen.

Frank Herbert

(1920–1986) American writer Frank Herbert was born in Tacoma and graduated from the University of Washington in Seattle. He was a man of many trades: he worked as a reporter, editor, professional photographer and cameraman, commentated for local radio stations, went to sea as an oyster diver, and served as a jungle survival instructor. His first short story, Looking for Something?, was published in the magazine Startling Stories. He then wrote about twenty other short stories published in various sci-fi magazines, and in 1955 he published his first novel, The Dragon in the Sea. It was well-received by critics, as were his other novels The Green Brain (1966), Destination: Void (1966), The Eyes of Heisenberg (1966), The Heaven Makers (1968), The Santaroga Barrier (1968), The Godmakers (1972), and Hellstrom's Hive (1973). However, true success did not come until 1965 with the novel Dune. The first part was published as Dune World in December 1963 in the leading sci-fi magazine Analog. The story then continued as The Prophet of Dune due to reader interest. For the book edition, Herbert combined both parts and titled them simply and aptly Dune. The book won the Hugo Award in 1966 and the first-ever Nebula Award in the same year. The author then expanded on the theme in five sequels capturing the subsequent fate of the planet Arrakis and the struggle for its control. In 1984, David Lynch directed a film adaptation of Dune, and in 2000, a co-produced three-part miniseries was also created, which was partly filmed in the Czech Republic.

Excerpt from the book

“When I set out to lead humanity along my Golden Path, I promised them a lesson that would be remembered in their bones. I know a grand pattern that humans deny with their words, even as their actions confirm it. They say they seek security and quiet, the state they call peace. But even as they speak, they create the seeds of turmoil and violence. When they find their quiet security, they are not at ease in it. How it bores them! Just look at them now. Look at what they are doing at the very moment I record these words. Pshaw! I have given them ages of enforced tranquility, which drags on and on despite all their attempts to escape into chaos. Believe me, the memory of Leto's Peace will remain with them forever. They will now seek their quiet security only with extreme caution and good preparation.”
