“Train of Thought“ is the seventh studio album by the American progressive metal band Dream Theater, released on November 11, 2003 under the label Elektra Records. The album was produced by John Petrucci with Mike Portnoy. The band played most of the songs from this album at the concert, where their DVD Live at Budokan was recorded.

Dream Theater is an American pro-metal band. It was founded by students of Berklee College of Music, Mike Portnoy (drums), John Myung (bass guitar) and John Petrucci (guitar). They originally performed under the name Majesty. So they released one demo and took on singer Charlie Dominici. They found out that the name they chose already had a certain jazz formation, so they chose the name Dream Theater. They hired keyboardist Kevin Moore and in 1989 released their first album When Dream and Day Unite. After this album, the singer Dominici left the band due to personal and artistic differences. After three years, they recorded another album, Images And Words, with singer James LaBrie. They recorded another album with keyboardist Moore and then, due to professional disagreements, was replaced by Derek Sherinian. He recorded only one album and then was replaced by Jordan Rudess. They remained in this line-up until 2010, when drummer Mike Portnoy left the band.

Although not well-known in the mainstream, 22 years after their founding, they have become one of the most commercially successful progressive-style bands since the peak of progressive rock in the 1970s. Dream Theater' s best-selling album is Images and Words (1992), which was awarded the Gold Record and is still considered a key album in progressive metal production, although it only reached number 61 on the US best-selling album chart, Billboard 200 The second best-selling album was Awake, which reached number 32 on the Billboard 200. Dream Theater has sold over 2 million albums in the United States and more than 6 million worldwide.

The band is very well known for its high technical prowess of all players who have won many music magazine awards. Dream Theater players are highly regarded among the best rock and metal players, so they often collaborate with other players and groups. The best-known example is guitarist John Petrucci, who has been named the third guitarist on the G3 tour five times, along with Steve Vai and Joe Satriani, more times than any other invited guitarist. Petrucci follows in the footsteps of Eric Johnson, Robert Fripp, Yngwie Malmsteen and other important guitarists.

Dream Theater are also known for their distinctive lyrics, quality concerts, unmistakable logo, quality audio recordings and original cover versions of songs. In stores they are most often in the hard & heavy. It' s probably because at the beginning of their career they were a frontman for Metallica.
