Electrical installations in timber structures and wood processing plants (vol. 126)

The issue of fire protection from electrical wiring and other electrical equipment has been addressed since the dawn of building electrification. However, with increasing demands for power transmission and the density of electrical wiring in buildings, it is becoming more and more prominent.

This handbook responds to the growing construction of not only timber-framed buildings, especially wooden log cabins and cottages, but also to the use of wood and similar materials in both the interior and exterior of buildings made from traditional materials (concrete, bricks, steel structures, etc.). Its importance is also highlighted in the modern approach to constructing multi-storey buildings.

Alongside protecting buildings from fires started by electrical equipment, the requirements for electrical installations to remain functional during a fire are also crucial.

The handbook consists of nine chapters, which cover:

– basic legislative and normative requirements, which assign individual fire protection requirements to specific buildings,

– requirements for wiring installations in important parts of buildings, basic requirements for electrical installations in areas with combustible materials, phenomena that can cause injury or damage, devices used to protect buildings from fires caused by electrical equipment, and other potential factors that must be considered,

– requirements for light fittings,

– requirements for electrical installations in family houses built entirely or partially from wood and their subsequent modifications, or modifications in flats within residential buildings using normally flammable materials,

– the issue of electrical installation in wooden buildings in general,

– the issue of disconnecting the electrical installation of a flat during a fire and protection against lightning,

– requirements for electrical installations in woodworking workshops,

– the issue of installing photovoltaics on these buildings,

– definitions used in both legislation and standards relating to this field.

This third edition is updated according to the technical standards valid as of 1st September 2026 and is supplemented with new findings from the design, installation, and maintenance of electrical installations and appliances in timber-framed buildings. It also draws on legislative regulations valid as of 1st September 2026.

The handbook is intended for designers, installation companies, and inspection technicians, as well as operators of electrical equipment. It also serves as part of the study materials for electricians preparing for professional qualification exams.
