Footprints in the snow

THE WALLS OF KŘIVOKLÁT CASTLE HIDE THAT WHICH WAS MEANT TO REMAIN BURIED…

At Křivoklát Castle, the past has never truly fallen silent. The old walls remember kings, prisoners, and executions, and sometimes their stone still breathes with it today.

Historian Záviš Brieftrager arrives at the castle as an archivist with a single goal: to get back on his feet and disappear from civilisation for a while. However, he soon discovers that his predecessor died under unclear circumstances and that a suspicious silence surrounds the whole affair. As he catalogues old books and manuscripts, connections begin to emerge, linking the present with the bloody history of the Křivoklát forests.

While working with 17th-century archival materials, Záviš also stumbles upon the turbulent fate of a soldier in the Swedish army, Jan, known as Stejskal – a man who, in his struggle to survive in a ruthless era, became entangled in a fatal circle of events. Past crimes thus resurface, and Záviš gradually learns that some traces did not disappear along with their perpetrators…
