Forgotten Voices II: Hard World

A book about a world that is not kind. About cruelty, indifference, and the shattering of illusions. The pivotal text in this volume is the novella Kuře melancholik (The Melancholic Chicken) by Josef Karel Šlejhar – an exceptionally powerful and still unsettling story of innocence exposed to the brutality of its surroundings.
The texts by Karel Matěj Čapek-Chod then complete the picture of a society where individuals clash with the harsh mechanisms of power, money, and social inequality.
