František Hrubín: At the table

We commemorate the great Czech poet, playwright and translator by reading from his lyrical prose U stolu. A handful of memories of childhood years spent in the picturesque region between the Vltava and Sázava rivers. There are three places that competed for the creative attention of the poet František Hrubín - his native Prague, where Hrubín spent most of his life, and the South Bohemian town of Chlum u Třeboně, where he regularly visited from the 1950s for his summer apartment. And above them and through them shone Posázaví, the undulating landscape of Hrubín's family and the land of his childhood and adolescence. In a lyrical memoir entitled At the Table (1958), mixing reality with dreams, the poet returns to the remote landscape between the Vltava and Sázava rivers, to his childhood, and brings the nice faces closer, things, of what's going on, but also the broader context around the former family table.
