Frederick, called Frederick the Great

He is one of the greatest Czechs, the creator of our national music, and we cannot imagine Czech culture without his work. Despite this, he wrote his boyhood diaries and love letters in German and did not learn to speak and write Czech properly until long after he was thirty. And this is far from the only circumstance that may surprise us in the author of The Bartered Bride or My Country. Many books have been published about Bedřich Smetana, and it would seem that his life has already been described in minute detail. But the more we learn about it, the more we also find that there is still much to discover. There is certainly no one all-encompassing view of our "most national" composer. The docu-novel Friedrich, called Bedřich, recounts his dramatic fate, but also his times and the stories of the people who surrounded him, loved and supported him or, on the contrary, made his path difficult. It is also a reflection on why Smetana was so many times propagandistically abused, like perhaps no other artist in our country. And finally, it asks some questions about ourselves that we still don't have answers to. The story of a Czech composer: "I just want to give you a message from my uncle," said Rieger's niece haughtily, confirming Elisha's guesses. "We all know that Mr. Smetana is not really deaf, he is only pretending to be deaf," she continued in her contemptuous tone. Elishka remained staring at her in disbelief. Is it possible that the hatred of Smetana's opponents goes so far as to deny his personal tragedy? "My uncle, therefore, tells you, miss, to stop supporting the hype that is being made about the chaplain. For one thing, he's a Wagnerian, who is constantly trying to Germanise Czech music, he thinks, that maybe it's some kind of merit, but in fact, the entire nation should condemn him for it, and not celebrate, and his feigned deafness! I mean, it's a shame that he's cheating people like that." Missy was getting more and more angry. "A deaf composer cannot compose music. At least, that's what my uncle says," she finished her speech and it looked like she was about to leave. She's accomplished her mission, so what's the point of hanging around, right?
