Glatz - Storm

A hundred years ago, Kladsko was a place where murder was rampant. How could it not, when even the angry Krakonoš joined in...

At the end of February 1923, a corpse hangs from the window of Vilém's lookout tower on the Prussian side of the Králický Sněžník ridge. The strange crime scene, looming over the entire region of Kladsko, and the drastic mutilation of the murdered wretch make it clear that the perpetrator took the crime as a warning. A political statement? Or perhaps a blatant mockery of the police, who are doing their best in a backwater corner of the Weimar Republic adjacent to the equally young Czechoslovakia? Because to make matters worse, the killer's note is soon found with a most fanciful signature. Are the law enforcement officers really supposed to believe that the spirit of the border mountains, Krakonoš - or more precisely, his far more terrifying German incarnation called Rübezahl - has jumped to this Sudeten outpost to settle his accounts?
Whether a prankster, a lunatic or a terrorist is behind the matter, it is certain that the local mortuary police will be sweating in the coming cold days. While the hyperinflation of that crisis year is still preparing a decisive attack on impoverished Germany, the corpses are already piling up like logs in the Rübezahl case and the secret services are already involved in the investigation. Although Chief Constable Franz Koschella is no longer the hothead he was in the early days of this modest corps, he has not ceased to be a man of the "old school", so he will also have to deal with the taming of pathologist Greta Fischer. The intrepid lady of considerable charm can contribute valuable insights to the mystery, but otherwise she would rather solve the mystery on her own. He probably has a reason because of his connection to one of the murdered men. In addition, it seems as if Franz's mentor, Captain Wilhelm Klein, is now on the opposite side and, given his wartime past, has become more involved than is appropriate for a military policeman...
The third part of the detective retroseries from the Claddagh borderlands of the 1920s sends the audience a tangle of surprises crowned with an avalanche. For know that Rübezahl has wrought a terrible vengeance and has not only one terrible face!

They wrote about the book:

The bar is set so high here that some established players of the genre can only look on enviously. (...) The Weimar Republic was born as an unwanted child and in the hearts of many ordinary Germans there is a deep wound and a sense of injustice that they were betrayed as soldiers at the front, even though victory was within reach...

The author has faithfully portrayed the demons of the recently ended Great War that still haunt Klein's mind and body, and the image of the county of Kladsko, which has only now regained its former fragile stability. The reader is thrown into the local melting pot, dominated by a fortress commemorating the Silesian wars, as into a deep pool.

Even if someone wanted to remind me emphatically that The Tempest is a crime film from 2021, I probably wouldn't believe them. The depiction of the shops, the inhabitants and the general opinion of the time is exactly as if the author were walking with us through the streets of interwar Kladsko. This is the only way to transport the reader back in time without difficulty and to appreciate how much the connection of truth to the poem completes good art. Thanks to a job well done, we can once again stay with familiar characters.
