Hadelich Augustin: Sonatas & Partitas (2x CD) - CD

Not so long ago, the Italian-German-American violinist Augustin Hadelich captivated listeners and critics alike with his "Czech album" (CD "Bohemian Tales") with compositions by Antonín Dvořák, Josef Suk and Leoš Janáček. His latest recording is a purely Bachian affair and is a technically and expressively extremely demanding programme. No one doubts that Bach's violin sonatas and partitas are masterpieces, requiring technical sovereignty and the utmost concentration of expression. In concert performances and in recording studios, however, they sometimes tend to sound somewhat academic and it is therefore the task of each performer to get rid of this possible academic "austerity". Hadelich opted for a compromise solution in terms of interpretation: uses modern strings, but plays with a baroque bow. Overall, it is also a "happy medium" between a strictly historically informed interpretation and the occasional more generous use of vibrato. The result is definitely worth repeated listening.
