Hannibal
The third and most controversial book in the four-part Hannibal Lecter series
Set seven years after The Silence of the Lambs, this book once again brings Hannibal Lecter face-to-face with Clarice Starling. However, she is no longer a promising FBI recruit; instead, she has a major screw-up behind her. Now, she has a chance to clear her name by taking on the task of putting Hannibal behind bars. But it’s not just the FBI after him. One of his earlier surviving victims, the sadistic paedophile Mason Verger, is also on his trail, seeking revenge in a particularly cruel manner—by feeding Hannibal to wild boars. In a story full of unexpected twists, we must say goodbye to the Clarice Starling we knew from the previous instalment, as this now-famous literary and film character undergoes a shocking transformation. This is why the novel was enthusiastically received by the likes of Stephen King, while other writers, such as Martin Amis, condemned it.
Thomas Harris
An American writer and screenwriter, a native of Mississippi, Harris began writing about crime in the United States and Mexico as a reporter and editor for The Associated Press in New York. His first novel, Black Sunday, was published in 1975. This was followed by Red Dragon in 1981 and then the world-famous The Silence of the Lambs in 1988. He completed the series with Hannibal and Hannibal Rising. All books in the Hannibal Lecter series have been adapted into films.
