Hatchet

"Readers rate my writing variously well, but I hear most often that Axe was the best. (. ) Now I had to proofread Hatchet, and I didn't feel like it. I was expecting boredom, since I know it all. But I wondered! I didn't know that again! And I was amazed at how very well written this book is. It is intense and precise. Realistic and fanciful. I could only write that once. It's always a question of what the author will write next, since he wrote the main thing in his first book." Ludvík Vaculík on the new edition of Axe in 2003 (first edition 1966)
