Both bodies lay among the poplars, the winter sun shining on them. The cavalrymen, who rode as scouts of the hundreds among the snow-covered hills along Elk Creek, were taken by surprise by death. It came as quietly as a snowflake. One of them had a broken arrow shaft sticking out of his back, which was used for hunting buffalo. The snow where they were ambushed was trampled by the hooves of stampeding horses. There was a long trail through the snow with a bloody streak in the middle. It showed how far the horse had been moving its body before it calmed down.
