Heraldry
Many publications have already been dedicated to heraldry, which is probably the most popular of the auxiliary historical sciences. However, the book by Charles VI of Schwarzenberg holds an exceptional place among them. Its author combined an ancient family tradition with a deep knowledge of a whole range of fields—from history and political science to art history. He was an essayist and a connoisseur of icon painting. His long-standing work in exile, during which he never lost his lively connection with the situation and culture of his homeland, was also significant. Among the works of this overlooked figure of Czech culture, Heraldry occupies a central place, offering a well-founded introduction to the truly noble discipline of history, the mysterious yet rigorous study of coats of arms and emblems. Although it was first published in 1941, the book remains a classic in its field to this day. This new edition is supplemented by a unique pictorial appendix.
