Herbie Hancock: Sextant
LP Record Herbie Hancock is one of the most prolific jazz pianists of the 20th century. A child prodigy, he played with such greats as Donald Byrd and Miles Davis. He was one of the first to embrace and master the electric piano, yet he always remained true to the acoustic sound. In fact, he constantly switched between electronic and acoustic sounds, touching upon almost every style of R&B, funk, and jazz while maintaining an original and distinctive voice. 1973's "Sextant" was recorded shortly before "Headhunters" and can be seen in the same vein, but it is more than just a prelude to a masterpiece. It features a kind of post-modern, free-form impressionism that touches the boundaries of funk.
