History of modern Israel
Since ancient times, the hot strip of land on the Mediterranean has witnessed many dramatic twists and turns that have moved the world. And all along there has been a yearning by the Jewish people for a land of their own, culminating in the Zionist movement of the 19th century and the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948. It immediately had to deal with the military onslaught of neighbouring states and its own dark side. But even the history of modern Israel is not just a history of wars. The very building of its own state was historically unique, and Israeli politics and culture are unparalleled anywhere, given the specificity of the country. The book briefly introduces the reader to the situation that gradually led to the establishment of the state in the 20th century, and then gives full attention to the period after 1948 up to the present day. Israel's history is interpreted from a politically neutral perspective and space is given to the "other side" - the Arab inhabitants of the country. The author is one of the foremost Czech experts on Israel and Palestine.
