Honoré de Balzac: Gobseck

In his youth, Gobseck was an adventurer. He soon learned to accurately gauge the motives, goals and, most importantly, the weaknesses of others. He uses this ability with an utter and, in a way, mesmerizing cynicism. He seems to be the last resort of indebted aristocrats, gamblers, unfaithful women, but his help is usually the last step to the edge of the abyss. He has given up all pleasures himself, his only passion being his possessions, which enable him to control others. He is a cold observer of the weaknesses and sins of others; no one knows anything about him, he knows everything about everyone.
