Immunopharmacology
The book is intended primarily for pharmacists and pharmacy students, as well as for doctors prescribing immunomodulatory drugs – mainly from the fields of immunology, allergology, rheumatology, skin, oncology, gastroenterology, internal medicine.
The comprehensive publication opens the issue of immunotherapy with the traditional chapter on cytokines, followed by chapters focused on thymic hormones, transfer factor, and synthetic immunostimulants. The issue of nonspecific immunostimulation is concluded by the chapter on microbial immunomodulators, which also discusses in more depth the issue of the stability of the human microbiome, the importance of which in modern immunology cannot be doubted.
Next comes the issue of immunosuppressants, classic cytostatics, or anti-inflammatory agents. The chapter devoted to aspects of immunosuppressive and anti-inflammatory treatment focuses attention not only on the field of transplantation medicine, but also points out the challenges of immunotherapy in the field of targeted treatment of autoimmune diseases. Attention is thus being drawn to the issue of the so-called biological treatments. The importance of immunopharmaceuticals in the field of infectious diseases is mentioned, which was emphasized by, among others, the recent global COVID-19/SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, which has brought to the forefront the issue of vaccination and the possibilities of using modern vaccine design technologies; A separate section of the publication is therefore dedicated to the topic of specific activation of immunity through vaccination.
The book also includes the issue of hypersensitivity to certain drug structures. The concept of immunotoxicology concludes the entire publication.
