Intermezzo
A time of longing, despair and unexpected possibilities begins for both brothers
Apart from being brothers, Peter and Ivan Koubek don't have much in common. Peter is in his thirties and works as a lawyer in Dublin. He is successful, capable, and seems like someone who is never fazed by anything. After his father's death, however, he can't sleep without pills, and his relationships with two very different women are getting on top of him – his first love, Sylvia, for whom he still has feelings, and a university student, Naomi, who finds the whole world laughable. Ivan is a 22-year-old competitive chess player. He has always felt like a socially awkward loner, not at all like his nonchalant older brother. Shortly after losing his father, Ivan meets Margaret, a woman several years his senior with her own troubled past, and they quickly begin an intense relationship. A new interlude begins for the two grieving brothers and their loves. A time of longing, despair, and unexpected possibilities, during which they get a chance to find out just how much their lives can bear without completely falling apart.
Sally Rooney
Sally Rooney (born 1991) studied English at Trinity College, Dublin; during her studies, she also devoted herself to political science and debating competitions. She made excellent use of these three experiences – literature and art, political insight, and argumentation skills – in her debut novel Conversations with Friends (2017), which quickly became an unexpected bestseller after its publication and catapulted Rooney into the ranks of the most acclaimed contemporary Anglophone authors. Her second novel, Normal People (2018), was even more successful with critics and readers. The popularity of both books was further enhanced by their successful television adaptations.
