Until I was forty, I just worked or lazed about on the sofa. Then I started hiking. In 2018, for the second time, I stood on the border of Mexico and the US, this time with a lightweight backpack and a Canadian partner, to walk to Canada along the ridge of the Rocky Mountains and find out why the phrase “Embrace the brutality” is used in connection with the 4500km Continental Divide Trail. What would be harder? Traversing the wilderness, or reconciling different ideas about how to work together?
