Jewish Prague

Prague owes its exceptional character to the fact that it has been a city of several nations for centuries. The problematic but functional and above all inspiring coexistence of Czechs, Germans and Jews was dramatically ended only by the Second World War. The loss of this multipolar world has taken away some of Prague's mysterious corners and its European context. Fortunately, however, she left behind a huge literary legacy represented mainly by legends and myths.
Jewish legends are often defensive, stemming from the eternally unsettled position of the Jews. The contrast of wealth (as a result of the pan-European spiritual connection of the Jews) and the fear of violence, poverty, disease and frequent pogroms - is the unifying theme of these tales. Not surprisingly, then, their theme focused primarily on the defense of the right of homeland and the unique education and religion of the Jews. Hand in hand with this was the element of moral appeal to human character.
We are entering the wondrous, bizarre, futile, of a world both harsh and beautiful, in the middle of which, behind the gates of the Jewish ghetto (later Josefov), he lived closed, a powerful and persecuted nation. A nation that in ancient times found a safe haven only in its world of faith and mystical cabal. The stories from Josefov have survived the ages, just like the mythical treasures.
