Joy Division: Substance (2x LP) - LP

In 1988, Factory Records released a compilation of the band's single recordings. It was essentially a companion to the compilation of the same name by Joy Division's successors, New Order, which had appeared a year earlier. The compilation includes, among other things, four singles that are not on the regular albums Unknown Pleasures and Closer (Transmission, Komakino, Love Will Tear Us Apart, and Atmosphere), including their B-sides. The recording was remastered in 2010 and is now available on vinyl for the first time.

Joy Division formed in 1976 in the English town of Salford, near Manchester. The quartet of Ian Curtis (vocals), Bernard Sumner (guitar, keyboards), Peter Hook (bass), and Stephen Morris (drums) originally called themselves Warsaw. Joy Division's music grew from punk roots, and the group is still considered the most distinctive and influential post-punk band of the late seventies and early eighties. Joy Division recorded two studio albums, ending their activity in 1980 when singer Ian Curtis committed suicide. From the ashes of Joy Division, another significant icon of British music, the band New Order, was later born.
