King in Yellow
Presenting the fourth instalment of the short story miniseries, featuring three tales by American writer Robert W. Chambers (1865–1933).
The first story, 'The King in Yellow', describes an encounter with a mysterious play script that gradually corrupts the mind of anyone who reads it. The story straddles the line between reality and madness, where the boundaries between art, obsession, and truth become dangerously blurred. The central figure is the unseen but ever-present threat of the King in Yellow, a symbol of the breakdown of order and human reason. This story became one of the cornerstones of cosmic and existential horror and significantly influenced later authors, including H. P. Lovecraft.
The second story, 'The Mask', tells of a man who is captivated by the charm and mystery of an enigmatic mask. He gradually succumbs to obsession and loses the boundary between reality and illusion. The dark atmosphere evokes the threat of losing one's own identity.
In the third story, 'In the Court of the Dragon', the narrator feels pursued by an unknown force that drags him into a nightmare full of threats and mysteries. The story emphasises the gradual escalation of fear and helplessness. The symbolism of the Court of the Dragon creates a feeling of a supernatural and inevitable catastrophe.
