A series of accidents so mysterious that they seem to be the work of supernatural forces plagues the estate of Hynek of Zádubí. However, Hynek suspects that his neighbour, the knight Jiřík – an adventurer with a reputation as a bandit who has returned home to a derelict keep after many years – has a hand in it.
