Les Misérables (1998) - DVD
Jean Valjean got to the galleys for stealing a piece of bread for his starving family. Due to unsuccessful attempts to escape, he was released from forced labor only after twenty years, in 1812, as a real criminal who lies unscrupulously and steals. The power to change his destiny was given to Valjean by the incredible goodness of the old bishop, who denied his robbery in front of the police. Ten years later, the former galley is the esteemed mayor of Vigau. Unfortunately, Inspector Javert, who knows Valjean from the galleys, is appointed the new local police commander. The mayor manages to hide his true identity, but the suspicious policeman devises a clever plan to force a confession out of him. Meanwhile, the former convict, now a respected man with a big heart, takes on the sick women of Fantina and promises her on her deathbed that he will take care of her daughter Cosette, who will be enslaved in the inn by the cunning thief Thernadier. Javert' s devilish plan to arrest the former convict would have worked out if Valjean had failed to escape at the last minute. With little Cosette, he finds refuge with the Parisian convent. However, the fates of Javert and Valjean intersect once again during the bloody Paris Revolution of 1832
