Little green elephant
Did the actress really commit suicide?
A famous actress is found dead on a park bench. Looks like she committed suicide. Something is not right here. The new temp at the Park of Culture and Recreation is overly interested in the circumstances of the crime.
A well-known actress from the North Bohemian town is found dead on a park bench. Looks like she committed suicide. He is wearing a theatrical costume and holding a jade elephant figurine. Something is not right here. The search is being undertaken by members of the district mortuary party under the command of Captain Pařízek and Lieutenant Dvořák, but the new brigadier in the Park of Culture and Recreation is also extremely interested in the dead woman and her surroundings. Not everyone likes the letter-writer with the big charm, men are jealous of him, his boss can make him angry at every opportunity. Who is very sympathetic to him, however, is the sister of the murdered actress, who blatantly harasses him. Brigadier Jan Bindr is getting to the bottom of things step by step. One thing he doesn't guess is that he'll find another dead body. Why is the little green elephant figure so important?
BETWEEN THE GREAT AND THE FINE
The detective story The Little Green Elephant is a testament to the author's search for a new hero, who would replace the "impenetrable" trio of searchers - Augustine the Great - during the period of normalisation, a former CSI, early retiree, because "you've got it all taped up." and his bohemian friends, the uncouth painter of nudes, Jozífek Smetana, and the all-round sculptor Gréta Hornová. In its time, the novel was not published until 2001, when it was substantially reworked into the seventh of the cases of the "unwitting detective" Ota
Fink, called The Lady with the Green Elephant. The only copy of the original text of The Little Green Elephant was found in an estate in 2018, and since this novel is still in many ways connected to the "Augustine" series and sufficiently different from the Fink version, we have included it in the series The Cases of Augustine the Great & Co. We now offer it to you together with a fragment of the detective story The Mystery of the Mummy, preserved in the form of a manuscript on lined paper. The basic plot of this unfinished case of Augustine the Great is identical to the plot of Ota Fink's fourth story, entitled Čenž, which was first published in 1989 by Naše vojsko, in one volume with the story Death of a Mosquito under the common title Čenž with Death.
