A journey at the centre of history and the supernatural
The year is 1748 and an important event is about to take place in Frankfurt am Main. Two strangers arrive through the city gate, one is Laurent, the immortal Count de Saint-Germain, and the other is a man no one would expect to be there. Laurent's new friend and teacher is Lucifer himself. This gives our hero a new identity and introduces him as Karl Johann Faust, philosopher, scholar and alchemist. Together with Lucifer, Laurent becomes the centre of the social life of the old imperial city, meets the beautiful Margaret and falls under the spell of Elisabeth, married to the imperial councillor Johann Caspar Goethe. The author plays out a historical and amorous fantasy, populated with real historical characters and supernatural characters who influence the fates of real people.
This free sequel to Kristýna Freiová's novel The Immortal Count tells the story of Johann Wolfgang Goethe's parents and the characters that may have inspired one of the greatest authors of world literature to write his immortal work about Dr Faustus in an unusual way.
