Luxembourg Epic III
The ambition and intransigence of King Charles IV
The third part begins with Charles' s fight for the crown of King of the Romans after Louis of Bavaria, but also with his search for a new bride after the death of his beloved wife, Blanche. Charles transforms into a decisive and ruthless ruler, willing to choose any path to achieve his goals. Prague becomes the center of the Roman Empire and the gloss that Charles gives it corresponds to this, but at the cost of costly politics and concessions to the domestic nobility and the church. And they must act the same way in the German states.
The novel ends with the issuance of the Golden Bull for the empire, thanks to which Charles consolidates his imperial power. His fate is intertwined with the gradual decline of the power of the lords of Landštejn, as the aging William is unable to resist the intrigues of all his noble relatives and his sons are unable to help him.
